Goal III: Knowledge Representation
"Students are proficient in the theory and application of skills essential for knowledge representation in evolving technology environments, in any chosen area of specialization."
III.a. Students analyze, organize, and describe various formats of information objects.
Using the website Omeka.org, a website for sharing digital collection and creating online exhibits, I had the opportunity to plan for a digital library that would be focused on Puerto Rican culture. To do this I had to survey the types of information objects (materials) available as well as understand their various formats. I had to survey online domains, repositories, libraries, archives, and even my own camera roll. From this exercise I created six collections: “Buildings and Fortresses of Viejo San Juan, P.R.;” “Maps of Puerto Rico;” “History of Puerto Rico;” “Gazeta de Puerto-Rico;” and “Transformational Hurricanes.”
III.b. Students identify and apply best practices in the use of different technologies for knowledge representation.
Employing an online cataloguing website Library Thing, I practiced and demonstrated the ability to catalogue different kind of information objects as well as to build accompanying metadata.
